Avocado on the Alentejo coast: the Azul Empírico story
In 2022, Azul Empírico, part of the Aquaterra group, planted 212 hectares of Hass avocado at Herdade do Mar, in Grândola (Portugal). Magos installed the irrigation system from scratch, all at once.
Avocado is one of the crops that has grown most in Portugal in recent years, alongside olive and almond groves. And it is no longer grown only in the Algarve: it has spread to other regions, such as the Alentejo coast.
The Aquaterra group's investment
The Aquaterra group chose Portugal to invest in this subtropical crop because of the soil and climate conditions in some regions of the country. To carry out the investment it set up Azul Empírico, and avocado trees began to grow on several farms along the Alentejo coast.

«The irrigation work was installed from scratch and assembled all at once», says Paco Albuixech, field manager at Azul Empírico.
